She must have dozed again, safe and warm, because the clock on his mantle was chiming ten when she woke again. And he was still there, still holding her.
âSleep well?â
âMmm,â she nodded agains this shoulder. âQuite well.â
âCome and have luncheon.â He helped her stand, watching her with a quiet hunger as she shook down her wrinkled shift. âI took the liberty of hiring Betsy to continue being your maid.â
She gave him a grateful look, staring down at her wedding gown where it lay crumpled on the floor. âThereâs so much to do, we have to send the thank you cards out and the wedding cake, and then we have to arrange our at homes and-â
âAnd all of that will wait until after weâve cleaned up and eaten.â He offered her his robe, helping her into it. âYour wardrobe is just next door. I ordered you a bath while you were sleeping.â
She could feel the sticky remnants of their passion on her legs and nodded. âThank you, Alex.â
âIâll meet you downstairs,â He took her hand and walked with her over to the door heâd pinned her against last night. She felt her body warm, but he just kissed her hand and left her there.
Pen pushed the door open, coming face to face with Betsy, a steaming tub, and a deep green gown that her maid was brushing out for her.
âGood morning, my Lady.â Betsy smiled at her. âHow would you like your hair today?â
âI do not know if we will be having guests.â Pen sat at the dressing table and winced as Betsy pulled the remaining pins out of her hair and proceeded to comb out the tangles.
âSomething formal then.â Betsy helped her out of her shift, sheâd lost her stockings sometime in the night and she blushed at the thought that they were somewhere in his bed.
Pen bathed, Betsy helped her with her hair, and then into the gown which was fluffed and layered over all the proper undergarments before she was dismissed to go down to luncheon.
âIâll have your trousseau put away as it arrives.â Betsy said with a smile. âItâs coming from several shops.â
Pen nodded, âthank you, Betsy.â
âMy Lady,â Betsy curtsied, but grinned at Pen. âMay I wish you happiness, Penelope?â
âThank you,â Pen smiled at the woman who had been with her her entire life. âI hope we will be.â
âDonât simply hope,â Betsy shook her finger at Pen. âYou cannot simply hope, you must take the reins and make it so.â
âYouâre quite right,â Pen said, gripping the sides of her skirts in both hands. âIf itâs to be, itâs up to me.â
